What to Write in a Sympathy Card: Christian Messages & Scripture

For a family member: "I love you and I am with you through this. There is nothing ahead that you will face alone — and there is nothing that separates us from the love of God. (Romans 8:38–39)"

Scripture Verses for Sympathy Cards

Psalm 23:4 — "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." Perhaps the most comforting verse in all of Scripture for the grieving. It doesn't promise the valley won't come — it promises we don't walk through it alone.

John 11:25 — "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die." The words Jesus spoke before raising Lazarus. For Christians who have lost someone in faith, these words are a direct promise.

2 Corinthians 1:3–4 — "The Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles." A reminder that comfort in grief is not passive — God actively comes near.

Isaiah 41:10 — "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you." A verse of pure reassurance — God names exactly what the grieving heart is feeling and responds to it directly.

Revelation 21:4 — "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain." A forward-looking verse that grounds grief in the hope of what is coming. Beautiful for a card to someone whose loved one died in faith.

Psalm 34:18 — "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Short, specific, and deeply personal — God is not distant from the grieving heart. He draws near.

Matthew 5:4 — "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Jesus's own words from the Sermon on the Mount. Grief is not a sign of weak faith — it is something Jesus blesses and promises to meet.

Psalm 147:3 — "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." A gentle, tender verse — God as a healer who tends to wounds, not just a comforter who speaks from a distance.

Romans 8:38–39 — "Neither death nor life... nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God." One of the most sweeping promises in the New Testament — death itself cannot break the bond of God's love.

1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 — "We do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope." For the believer, grief is real — but it is not hopeless. This verse honors the pain while lifting the eyes.

What NOT to Write in a Sympathy Card

• "Everything happens for a reason" — Even if you believe it, this phrase rarely comforts. In the acute pain of grief, it can feel dismissive of how devastating the loss actually is.

• "I know exactly how you feel" — Every loss is singular. What you experienced in your grief is yours; their grief is theirs. Enter the loss humbly rather than mapping your own experience onto theirs.

• "At least they lived a long life" / "At least they're not suffering" — These minimize the very real grief of the person who loved them. There is no "at least" in the middle of loss.
